Eventful Week

I'm sorry I haven't posted in a while.  This week has been a blur!  The above photo is my husband's hand.  Trust me- you don't want to see a picture without the bandage.   On Tuesday, he and the table saw got into an argument and the table saw won.  Fortunately, I was home when the accident happened.  He yelled to me for help, which I got in the form of the wonderful paramedics at our local volunteer fire department.  They called the ambulance, we ended up in the hospital ER, and a few hours later he was in surgery.  The saw blade cut through his hand to the bone at the base of his thumb, chipping the bone and severing all kinds of important stuff like a tendon, an artery, veins, and lots of nerves.  I'll spare you the rest of the details- let's just say it isn't pretty.  The gifted surgeon re-attached everything and put his hand back together, which is absolutely mind-boggling to me.  He was in the hospital for 2 days.  He's home now, and doing better every day.  Now- on top of my many medical appointments, we are adding appointments for him.  The surgeon is hopeful that he will regain full use of his hand, after lots of physical therapy.  I'm so very, very grateful that I was home with him when it happened, that it was his LEFT hand (he's right handed), and that he didn't lose the thumb.  He had a few rough days and nights, but each day is better.  He's in pretty good spirits now and he is doing as much as he can for himself and only asking me for help when he absolutely needs it.  That's my guy!

As if life wasn't exciting enough, a large limb broke off a tree right outside the house on Wednesday night and fell just inches from my car.  You might recall that I was in an accident in November and my car is just recently repaired.  I'm glad we didn't have to take it back to the body shop AGAIN!

So you can see why I haven't had time to post.  I got caught up on shipping orders yesterday and I'll post the February giveaway soon.

Oh, my gosh. That is the kind of excitement no one wants. I am glad you were there too. It sounds like he could have lost a lot of blood without your quick reaction.

Oh my! I feel for him. that surely is painful and will be for quite a while. I am glad you were there, also. I am thankful that the surgeon got it all put back together.

Oh my goodness, what an unfortunate accident, I would have been so freaked out. Good thing you were there and had a level head on your shoulders. Its lucky also that a good surgeon took care of him. Give him our regards and hop he does his therapy.

Oh Sue. I'm so sorry to hear about your husband's battle with the saw. But happy to know you were there to help and he'll be ok. I had my own experience years ago with a saw and still have nightmares about it...and haven't been able to use a saw since! Don't even like to go near them anymore, or hear the sound!

Hugs, many hugs to you and your DH!

I think you guys need to stay in bed for a week and not go out, but then with your luck, something would land on your house, lol. Every time my husband uses the table saw, it sets my nerves on edge. I hope the both of you take care of yourselves and heal quickly and no sharp objects;)

Oh my Sue, I know just what you are going through and your husband with this injury. My Husband did the exact same thing on a portable table saw a couple of years ago, but his was not as bad. We got rid of the portable saw and he got a better model, but I am still uneasy when he goes to his workshop. Did you know that there is a table saw that will not cut flesh. It cuts wood only, if you even try to cut a hot dog the blade retracts, so no harm to the operator. Maybe we both need to invest in one of those saws for our hubbys... A speedy recovery to your husband. Bonnie

Many many years ago my husband seriously injured his thumb with a knife. I was at work, but thankfully he wasn't alone. His brother took him to the ER. I didn't know any thing until I got home. They were able to repair the damage to the tendons, etc. Unfortunately, he never regained full flexibility and range of motion. However! when he gripped something with that hand it definitely wasn't going to get away lol. Scary stuff!

I was wondering where you were the past week. I hope that he heals quickly. It's a blessing that you were there when it happened. Don't those saws have a guard on them?

My dear Sue, have you and your DH thought about taking some time off and just going away and relaxing for a week or so. You might miss a few massages, but time away with no responsibilities might be as good or better. Especially after the year you had last year (selling houses, moving stuff across the country, growing your businesses, getting your barn the way you want it for your shop [is that what DH was working on], the accident(s), and I'm sure I missed some things). Maybe somebody (besides me) is trying to tell you two to take a little break.

He IS lucky that it was his left hand. When I had all the hand surgeries to fuse finger joints, the one that had big complications was my right thumb. After four surgeries, I have pretty good use of it, but I really need one more. I've pretty much adapted to the limitations I have. My handwriting is fairly illegible, though . You don't realize all the things your thumb does until you don't have the ability to use it!

It sounds like your husband had a great surgeon so the chances of his recovery look pretty good.

I agree with the previous commenters about the safety factors with equipment like the saws. I figure if they can make a saw to cut a cast off that will know when it touches skin and quit, they ought to be able to build in better safety factors.

So ladies, remember to close the cover on your rotary cutter EVERY time you set it down and make sure that you have all fingers out of the way when you cut. And keep the cutter over your work surface -- I've dropped one and thanked heaven that I had shoes on and not just socks or bare feet.

A vacation sure sounds nice right about now! Unfortunately, that will have to wait until both of our doctors spring us loose.... soon, I hope!

On the subject of safety- my DH is VERY safety conscious. This was a freak thing- the wood kicked back- and his hand was actually thrown- hard to explain. But he didn't just feed his finger under the blade- his hand came down on the blade from above. In all the years he has worked with cars and wood and all manor of dangerous equipment- this is the first time he has been hurt. When I got to him- he still had his safety glasses on.

Brenda is right- ALWAYS close your rotary cutters EVERY time you put them down!

Thank you all for all of your kind words and good thoughts. Every day is better. This, too, shall pass!

Oh my you have had a rough January and I will pray for your husbands hand. My hubbie when he was alive used power saws and other "dangerous" machines and he also had an accident but heeled nicely. Just keep on truckin!!

Hi Sue,

Oh my, so sorry to hear about your dh's accident. I sure hope he gets to feeling better soon. I have a habit of passing out when I see blood, so I hope nothing like this ever happens to my dh. He'd be on his own for a few moments until I came to, to call the ambulance. I sure hope you have a better month. Take care..
